My wife and I consider ourselves very lucky to know Trevor Wilde. I met him when we were both on the board of a non-profit organization in Arizona in 2006.
As Trevor and I started working together, I noticed he was extremely knowledgeable about finance and I could see his work ethic. I decided that I’d ask about his company, Wilde Wealth and the financial services they provided.
Interview Questions Part 1
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
I am the oldest of four kids, three of whom are adopted including me. I grew up in North Scottsdale, playing football from a young age. My father worked in the financial industry, so it was always appealing to me.
Today, I am the co-founder and managing director of Wilde Wealth Management Group as well as an Investment Advisor Representative who holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designation. Since our inception, we have grown the business from one office to five (Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Payson, Terre Haute, IN).
For the past 10 years, I have been fortunate enough for Barron’s to name me to its annual list of top advisors nationwide, earning a seventh overall in Arizona for 2018, my highest ranking to date.
When not busy at work, I am an even busier husband and father of four young daughters.
What was it like playing college football and how has it helped you in your career and/or approach to work, if any?
There are a lot of lessons about both work and life that can be learned on the football field. And this is far before I stepped onto the national stage in college.
Learning how to set short- and long-term goals, both big and small, was ingrained in me from the first moment I stepped on the field as a child. And while not all goals were always realistic or immediately achievable, I learned that setbacks were only temporary and to always push forward.
By pushing forward, I eventually earned a linebacker position on Horizon High School’s nationally ranked football team – a team that would go on to win the 1995 Arizona State Football Championship.
As my position’s name would imply, we linebackers literally line up behind the defensive linemen. What most people don’t realize is the amount of verbal and nonverbal communication required by the position to be effective. We also have to read plays quickly and respond immediately because one misstep can result in missing the tackle, or causing someone else to miss something critical.
I continued to pursue football throughout college while studying to eventually go into finance like my father. I ended up walking on to the University of Arizona’s football team.
Especially then, I really started to see how every single play, every single practice, win and defeat was preparing me for my future in business and beyond. I also saw the critical role that understanding teamwork, taking calculated risks and having the ability to be coached played in the lives of everyone around me.
How long has Wilde Wealth been in business?
In 2000, I worked for a big financial firm, but we focused very narrowly on retirement planning and investments.
From my football days, I was so used to working on a team that always had an eye on the bigger picture, I quickly found myself wanting to do more to help my clients beyond simply working toward their retirement goals.
Therefore, my father and I teamed up to found Wilde Wealth Management Group together in 2003.
Our mission was two-fold: to offer boutique, customized investment and planning advice in a fiduciary capacity, and to offer clients expanded in-house service offerings from fellow independent professionals and specialists in the fields of legal, taxes, risk management, real estate and even insurance.
Over the past 15 years, Wilde Wealth Management Group has earned accolades from Forbes, Barron’s, and Cetera Advisors while bringing independent investment advisors, Certified Financial Planners®, attorneys, mortgage specialists, an insurance team and even a Certified Public Accountant on board – and in house – as trusted partners.
How can Wilde Wealth help individuals/families plan for retirement?
Our job is to take all of the varied pieces of your financial puzzle and arrange them together to bring the bigger picture into focus.
Often, mastering the puzzle starts with assessing and organizing your current financial situation. We call this initial process discovery, and it starts with a face-to-face meeting to uncover your financial needs, short- and long-term goals and concerns, as well as taking a hard look at your current financial position.
During this meeting and immediately after, we look at everything from your investments to-date; earnings pay statements; retirement plan summaries; pension/profit sharing plans; tax returns; debt; outstanding loans; real estate and rental properties; estate planning documents in place; and more.
With all the pieces turned over and organized, we are able to help you see the foundation you’ve already created as identify the missing pieces in building toward your ultimate fiscal goals and priorities.
After careful review, we start to build the framework that will help us pursue your goals. Your plan will be custom to you and actionable based on your needs and wants.
During the next phase – implementation – we make sure your plan is always in line with your goals, and we are able to make changes as your life status and priorities shift over time. We do this via a formal review process, which we predetermine at the onset of our relationship, as well as regular ongoing communications and portfolio performance evaluations.
In addition to formal review meetings, we also offer a web-based account aggregation and planning system that provides you with real-time data on any and all of your holdings.
Part 2 of our interview questions will be posted next week! We can’t wait for you to see the rest of the questions as we learn more about Trevor, Wilde Wealth, and the benefits of having a professional financial planner.
