Do you need to detox?? What is a detox? Who should detox?
Would you believe me if I say I detox often?
I’m not saying I go through some extensive withdrawal-type of detox or extreme diet. I just mean I’m continually clearing out things from my life. Sometimes to make space for new things, and sometimes just do clear it out.
The marketing around the word detox itself can be misleading. Its official definition is essentially “a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances” (Webster Dictionary).
But if you read and believe all of the marketing (especially around the New Year), you might believe that it is 100% necessary and that your body isn’t capable of doing it on its own and that you will die a horrible death if you don’t do it and that your health depends on it. Well, I got news for ya – 1) a detox isn’t always necessary, and 2) your liver does a pretty good job of clearing out toxins from your body.
So, what are some examples of the detox that I am talking about? Here are some examples of things I detox from, and some you might consider too:
- Crap TV – you know what I am talking about. We all have our guilty pleasures that involve yelling and trash and stuff that just fills the brain with clutter. I use these types of shows for mindless entertainment and sometimes to just unwind. Then I get to a point where I can’t believe I watch that JUNK and I have to just stop for a while.
- Caffeine – I don’t consider myself an addict. I don’t even have caffeine every day, but I do go through phases where I feel like I am drinking too much. It usually happens at work I just get in a habit of getting a tea at a certain point of the day. One of the things I do to help stop caffeine is just switch to a decaf tea that tastes good. Usually I go for a mint one. Try it! For some reason, it is just so satisfying. Side note, there is nothing wrong with caffeine, and it is perfectly healthy to drink a cup of coffee or whatever in the morning. However, if you feel like you are relying on it too much throughout the day, there might be some other stuff going on. Might be time to look at your nutrition and lifestyle as a whole and see what you can do to improve it.
- Sugar – Usually around the Holidays…. OK… from Halloween to Christmas LOL, I can tell that I’m enjoying sugar a little too much. So, I just try my best to go cold turkey. This starts with clearing out the house first, and declaring 85% chocolate is the only sweet allowed in the house. This could also include a 24 hour “cleanse,” which may be fasting, or using some supplements to support the fasting. This gets rid of my sugar cravings 100% of the time. It is though to do though! Some people call sugar itself a toxin. In some forms, it just might be, so, regardless if you need or want to detox from it, just keep it to a minimum as much as you can.
- Hateful Self Talk – OK, this is an ongoing mindset thing. I wasn’t going to put it on this list, but I need to be transparent here. Constant battle around telling ourselves we aren’t good enough or thin enough or ripped enough is a bad habit and one we all need to detox from. What we tell ourselves really does matter in our lives and our minds. What we tell ourselves actually manifests itself in our lives too. Scary (or is it actually wonderful???)! BUT, we can turn it all around! Whenever I catch myself in that negative mindset, I immediately tell myself the opposite of what I just said. So….. “I look fat in this” becomes “I am strong and lean.” You get the idea.
A few points to summarize:
Detoxes don’t have to be some extreme diet or costly program. It can simply be changing some habits that aren’t serving you right now.
It is OK to be on and off the wagon on eating/drinking what’s best for you. Ebbs and flows are part of the whole health process, and dealing with it and responding when we fall off is what makes the difference. How we recover and then honor our growth will make the difference.
Don’t get hung up on the word detox, especially in the fitness industry. The word has many meanings and many levels and we can all use a healthy dose of it at times.
