I’ve been a big reader all my life. I read everything, from some serious mysteries, to light beach reads, to personal development. I always have my Kindle or a book with me. Ya never know when you might get a chance to sneak away for a few minutes to read a page or two. It is relaxing and stimulating at the same time. I just love the escape.
So, I was thrilled when author Maya Sacher, reached out with an opportunity to read her new book Hungry For Love – and an opporunity to share her recipe for Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies!!
I have to admit I did have some preconceived notions about this book, just based on the cover, but WOW was I wrong! I expected it to be typical woman torn between to lovers, finds herself and her passion, and does not end up with either man, but rather with a higher purpose (in this case, baking, based on the cover) and living happily ever after. Without giving too much away, this is not how this story goes! But, there is plenty of cookie baking involved to keep that aspect open.
What I really liked about Hungry For Love was that it didn’t go the traditional, predictable route. The story was also multifaceted, as the main character, Elizabeth, had a lot of stuff going on – her husband in a coma, issues with her mother’s death, her father’s relationship, her new lover, her new lover’s daughter. I really thought it was pieced together well and flowed nicely. It all unraveled (in a good way) and I felt like I was right there, working through the story with Elizabeth.
I will also say that I didn’t necessarily “like” Elizabeth. But, all this means to me what that the character was so well-developed that I actually had an emotional reaction to her, which is something that rarely happens when I read. I don’t typically get too invested in the characters, unless it really draws me in like this character did. It was also fun to see her escaping into some baking. We all have some activity that brings us joy, so it was very relatable to read about her passion and her skills for this artform.
Here’s a quick summary of the story line. Elizabeth’s husband was in an accident and has been in a coma for some time. She has a career as a dentist and visits her husband daily. Then one say, she is invited out, and meets a new man. They become friends and their relationship grows. All the while, she is discovering things about her past and her calling in life and it causes a some upheaval. The reader takes the ride and, again, I’m not going to give the ending away, but there are tough decision and life choices that need to be made by all the characters. The ending was a complete surprise.
I wouldn’t say this is “light” reading, but it isn’t too heavy either. So, if you are in the mood to get lost in something, then Hungry For Love is a great choice!
