I like efficiency. I like speed. I like neat. I like reliability. I like healthy. I’ve found that these small appliances and gadgets help me achieve all of that. I abuse them pretty much daily, and I’ve been able to maintain or even improve our health, our efficiency and our variety in the kitchen.
I’m not kidding you, I use most of these every day and others at least 3 times per week. Most of them have been through multiple houses and moves with us in AZ and have lasted our entire marriage. 😊
I feel more productive and healthy when I use them. These are not fancy, expensive name brand things that you have to special order and store in a particular way. They are all very basic, and simply put, they have helped us save money, eat better and spend less time in the kitchen and more time out enjoying life.
I love these because they just make things happen quicker and like I said, have had no issues (knock on wood), even with all the abuse we put them through. Ok, here we go:
- My trusty Ninja Blender. If you are looking for quick, nutritious meals that you can eat on the go like everyone else is, then you need some sort of blender. Ours gets used 3-4 times PER DAY. We mostly use it to blend up our protein shakes. It came with 3 different sized cups and I mostly use the largest one hee hee. I like to put tons of ice and water in my shakes and the Ninja chops through ice and frozen fruit like no other. Our shakes never have clumps, the blades never get stuck and it is easy to clean. There are more expensive blenders out there, but I will be loyal to my Ninja. I originally got it at Kohl’s and it was cheap, under $50. So, if you are in the market for a blender, this is the perfect one! There is nothing like a quick smoothie or shake if you don’t have a lot of time to cook or prepare a meal. You can great nutrition in shake form!
2. Our ancient Food Processor. For a long time, I was a hand chopper. I only used the processor for major tasks, but now, I whip it out for even just chopping one thing. We grate our own cabbage a few times a week (to add into our shakes) and this saves us a few bucks a week since we don’t have to buy the pre -packaged cabbage. I also use it maybe once a week for hummus, salsa or some sort of dessert (lots of the paleo desserts I make are made in a food processor for some reason). It is super huge and old school, but very effective. To me, it is better to it to take it out, use it, clean it and put it away than it is to chop stuff by hand. Now, speed-wise, if you include the assembly and clean up, hand chopping might be faster, but that whirrrrrr of the food processer is so satisfying. I’m not shy about using it anymore. And it has helped us to eat more veggies, because we are sneaking them into more recipes. Most of the time you can’t even taste them!
3. The Ever-Loving Food Scale. Everyone should have one of these. Any reliable brand will do. We use it multiple times per day. Measuring most of our food. It just gives us a certain comfort level so we know our portions are under control. Portion control is so important to our health. Once we started weighing out our protein, fat and carb foods, we couldn’t believe the amount of food we were actually eating before. The way
that food is packaged can be deceiving. We think it is what one person should eat, but really, it is enough for two. Also, have you ever weight out 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter?? So depressing! FYI – protein portions for women should be 4-5 ounces per serving and for men, 6-8 ounces. Same for carb sources – about 4 ounces for women and 6 ounces for men. After a while, maybe you will get better at eye-balling your portion sizes, but to be honest, I still haven’t gotten too good at it! I still weigh everything most of the time. I don’t obsess if I am out to eat or at a friend’s house, but when portion size is under my control, the food scale is a life saver. I think it is a must have for any kitchen!
4. The Fabulous Instant Pot. The IP as we affectionately call it has been instrumental in our healthy food prep. We use it a few times per week, mostly for chicken, but also for other meats. I even use it to sauté because I feel it is easier and hotter than our actual oven, yet doesn’t heat up the kitchen when we turn it on. The IP totally has a cult following LOL, and there are TON of recipes and even recipe books dedicated to the IP! It is nuts! The Facebook group is going strong and growing like crazy! I love a good dump recipe and the IP is perfect for that. I think that flavors come out better from the IP than from the slow cooker, but different people feel differently. I hardly ever break out the slow cooker anymore. What I like about the IP is that even if it is late and we don’t want to cook, we really don’t have to. We can put some frozen chicken in there with some spices and some water (or broth) and in about 40 minutes, we have meals for that night and the next few nights. The IP is great for chilis and soups too. We’ve had great luck with everything we’ve tried. I’ve yet to try to bake anything sweet, but I see some amazing cheesecakes in that facebook group! If you are going to start doing some food prep to ensure you have a healthy week of meals, then the IP is a must have. It makes it all much easier.
5.The Powerful Dyson V-6. OK, this isn’t really a kitchen appliance, but it is hanging on a wall adjacent to our kitchen…and we use it every day… This is our newest addition to our household. We actually went to the Dyson store to get our old Dyson repaired and ended up leaving with 2 new vacuums LOL! What suckers we are!! But, OMG this little one is the best thing ever. It is cord free, charges quickly, and is DISCONTINUED, so it is 50% off RIGHT NOW!! (Dyson just introduced a V10 for $600.) It is THE BEST on kitty litter and little cat hair tumbleweeds. I also use it all the time in the kitchen, hence its appearance in this post. It sucks up everything (but no water, or we will ruin it) and is flexible so it gets under the cabinets and furniture. We have all tile and wood in our house, so this little baby is perfect. I’m telling you, this purchase was more exciting than anything I’ve purchased recently, including workout clothes LOL! The house feels cleaner, and I feel better having a cleaner house.
Well, that is it, that is my list! Are any of all of these things absolutely necessary to make your life better or healthier, no. But, maybe they can help you accomplish some of the mundane tasks a little more efficiently so you can move onto other, more fulfilling things in life. And maybe they will help ease the angst of having to prepare healthy foods, as they make it so much simpler!
