Mario and I pride ourselves on finding new and local (non-chain) restaurants in the Phoenix area. We try to find a new place every weekend to have our Saturday lunch date. We love that our money goes to a small business owner and we love that the food is always soooo good!
So, enter Tacos Tequila Whiskey (TTW) in Arcadia (a fancy area of Phoenix). First of all… disclosure… we realized after the fact that there are a couple locations in Denver, CO. Soooo…. oops on the whole local small business support LOL. Well, 4 locations isn’t quite McDonald’s level, so its not that bad.
As I mentioned, we like to get out of our comfort zone, find and try new foods and joints in the Valley. We took the 20 minute drive to Arcadia and found the TTW in a new little strip with 2 other cool restaurants in it.
Walking up to TTW, there is a really nice patio with misters and a ton of seating. It was about 100 degrees in Phoenix that day, so we opted to sit inside. The decor inside was very sleek and modern. They had touches of Day of the Dead skulls and a very colorful mural of Frida Kahlo.
Inside, they have a huge bar and plenty of low and high top tables. The kitchen is visible from the restaurant, which we like. It does bring a certain level of comfort as a diner.
Now for the FOOD!
The menu had a great variety. It was Saturday, so they had brunch and lunch options. We are generally not brunch people (but I am definitely a mimosa girl!) and I’m allergic to eggs, so we chose several options from the taco menu.
The tacos are all street tacos, so it is possible to try a bunch of different flavors, which we did. We also had the Queso Fundido with Chorizo and it was frigging delicious!! (Side note: Yes, we totally went off the plant based lifestyle and splurged on meats and cheeses, totally worth it.)
TTW makes their chips to order, so when the Queso Fundido came out, it was hot and bubbling, and the chips were warm and salty. OMG, it was so perfect! We could not stop eating it!
On to the tacos… we tried:
The Vegan Tacos – black bean hummus, fried avocado slice and some other great toppings
Carnitas – Crispy roast pork and pickled onions
Lengua – Beef tongue, avocado, cilatro, pico
Fish N Beer – Beer battered fish, avocado and pineapple guacamole
Grilled Shrimp – Shrimp, pineapple, cabbage and cilantro slaw
I think my fave was the Grilled Shrimp. Every ingredient on there came together in a perfect combo. I savored every bite. I’m usually a fast eater, but I slowed way down for this one. So good!
The Fish Taco was Mario’s favorite. Although fried, the fish was super light, so tasty.
The Vegan Taco was also great! We’ve had bad fried avocado before, but this one was perfect. Loved every bite.
Overall, we loved everything we tried, and the service was great. It was one of those things where you could tell it was newly opened, so everyone was very attentive to every table. As we were leaving, it was getting more crowded, but the service never faltered.
We’d totally go back. And, while we were there, we noted several friends we’d like to bring back there for some great food and drinks.
We highly recommend Tacos Tequila Whiskey! Check out their full menu HERE!
