Ewwww, stay away from processed foods! They will kill you! They aren’t good for you! Eliminate them from your diet!
Yes, we’ve all heard that before, yes I’ve said that to you before. ?
But, as I take a look at my own diet, there are a ton (well not a ton), but several “processed foods” that I have come to rely on for my daily nutrition.
So, is it healthy? Can you lose weight?
First of all, you can lose weight eating anything. As log as you are consuming less calories than you are burning, you will lose weight. Now, are there better, healthier choices you could make that would keep you healthier as you lose weight? YES.
When it comes to processed foods, it takes a little time to see what foods will work for healthier weight loss. Some, I would say are even necessary for healthy weight loss!
The same basics still apply. Avoid packaged foods like cookies, crackers, chips, sweets, deli meats, and sugary sauces. My strategy here is to just not keep them in the house. Out of sight, out of mind.
When it comes to losing weight while eating processed foods, there are foods that are processed that are considered healthy. Things that you should probably be eating daily. Here are some examples of what I’m talking about:
- Greek Yogurt
- High Quality Protein Powder (and some protein bars)
- Milk alternatives (almond milk, coconut milk)
- Egg whites in the carton (I’m allergic, but the hubs uses a ton of these)
I would even say it is safe to increase your intake of these foods I mentioned above. Fill your diet with the good stuff and don’t leave room for the crap!
So, not all processed foods are created equally, and not all should be included in your diets. Or, I’ll say we’re not all perfect, some processed foods should be in your diet regularly, some should only be included once in a while. See, I cut you some slack there.
Losing weight doesn’t have to be totally miserable. It is counterproductive to go to an extreme and completely eliminate a whole section of the grocery store. Be picky about the processed foods you eat, but feel free to incorporate the healthier ones in your daily nutrition.
One final reminder – calories rule overall and will always count. But smarter calories are better calories and will pay off in the long run.
